Usually, when filming you´re doing everything you can to avoid seeing dust in your shots. In this project, it was the other way around. The challenge was to create dust that´s highly visible, moves like real dust, is believable on camera and works with additional VFX. After several days of trying different options with Jan Singh from Star Effects, we found a solution that worked for Felix, Emilia and AixSponza.

To create the unique dust-movements we recorded and motion-tracked a real dancer dancing a special custom choreography to the music prior to the filming in Bamberg. On-Set our DoP Felix created very slow and precise fluid motion to be up sped in post-Production. In post AixSponza mapped the artificial dust onto the motion-tracked choreography and combined it with Felix camerawork.
